I'm trying to find a triple antibiotic ointment/cream I can apply to an Impetigo wound to stop it from drying out, splitting the new layer of skin and weeping again there by letting more infection in.
The two main suggestions I've been given (Fucidin & Bactroban) are both prescription only in the UK. Does anyone know a brand I can just buy over the counter at a Pharmacy/Chemist because I'm already taking oral antibiotics for it and I don't want to go through a proverbial fight with the receptionists who seem determined not to let me see either my doctor or any doctor without a -very- good reason and a significantly long wait by which time it will be too late to help the infection anyway.
I get the feeling that the answer will be (you can't buy OTC antibiotics, you need a prescription) but I thought I would ask anyway to see if anyone has had any luck or can suggest a brand.
If not are there any suggestions of an alternative?
Right now I'm just washing it with a mild soap, bathing it with diluted TCP and then applying Balneum cream with a dressing to cover it.
I vaguely remember my grandmother telling me once that diluted tea tree oil was excellent for cleaning and healing infected wounds but I'm not sure if it's true or not and whether it would work for Impetigo.
