I'm aware of the pattern trading rules and i've studied and traded the US markets for 6 years now so it's a legitimate question for someone with experience....

I am confused.....the software that give you level 2 is also called direct market access ....is this right????? why do people make it seem as if it is something special....They say, no you can put in your price....but with Limit orders you always were able to put in your price?? WHAT AM I MISSING.?

Hey guys, Im a 1st year finance student and have a question which is bugging me. I use several trading platforms such as IG index, CMC markets, HSBC etc.
I was wondering what trading platforms hedge funds, Brokers, Investment banks use, I have come across DMA (Direct market access) but Im still a little confused.

•Voting Question: Question for DAY TRADERS and INVESTORS?

I'm going to start day trading stocks but the exchanges's rules say that you have to keep at least 25k in your margin account if you're executing more than 4 trades per week. I don't have 25k but I'm hoping I can get there by holding my money for longer terms in a few stocks and then start day trading with a direct access trading system.
My question is: MEANWHILE since I'm not going to need fast trade execution, an ability to follow a bunch of stocks simultaneously etc, CAN I just get by without a charting software? Can I get by on the info that is already published on whatever broker's site I use? I know that charting software is not necessary but will that put at a disadvantage in this method of investing?
And if you are a successful long term stock investor what is your decision making process in valuing a stock? How do you go about it? What do you give more weight to: fundamental or technical analysis?
Also do you know of any direct access trading system that offers a trading platform and a charting software all bundled up in one package? What are some good direct access systems?

• Electronic Trading Platforms and Brokers, which do you like?

I'm looking to switch from Real Time Markets to another more cost effective electronic trading platform, I need great Real Time intraday charts which I can draw on and enter data, level 2 options quotes, direct access, reasonable commissions and crude oil prices. Am I asking to much? I am looking into Options Station by Trade Station, has anyone ever used it or can anyone suggest another that they are happy with. I do not need a robust and elaborate system, something simple would be great, I only trade the Q's and a handful of others.
Any insight would be great! THANKS!!!

• Is it possible to effectively day trade (scalp) with TD Ameritrade?

I have a pretty good setup and I know TD Ameritrade recently bought thinkorswim. I really like their platform, but I have no idea how fast their transactions would be. This is especially important if I want to do scalping which relies heavily on quick transaction times. I KNOW THAT DIRECT ACCESS brokers are theoretically are much faster since I'm connected to the specialist / market maker, but that is not my question. Assuming I can ONLY use TD Ameritrade would it be sufficient for this type of trading? I can live with transactions taking 5 seconds instead of 1.
