• Can you answer some questions about weight gain or loss on lexapro?
|
I started lexapro 10mg a couple of days ago and am HORRIFIED at all of the stories I have read from people saying it changed their metabolism and caused them to gain 30-60 lbs.
I need some reassurance. In the past year I have lost 20lbs and there is noooo way I am going to gain it back.
So my questions...
1. Will being careful what I eat and making sure to get some good exercise keep this medicine from making me gain weight?
2. I have read that lexapro has been approved for binge eating...so would it work the opposite way for someone who had that problem before taking the drug? Therefore causing weight loss?
I am taking it for Generalized Anxiety Disorder which I have had for almost 4 years. I took these meds after the birth of my son for a few months 4 years ago but did not note any weight gain as I was still overweight from having a baby.
Thank you for your advice, I am really nervous about this. I don't see how taking a pill can make you gain weight.

• Lexapro and weight loss?
|
I'm currently taking 10mg of Lexapro each day. I have gained some weight since taking it, but I also believe its mainly due to the fact that I've been eating like a cow. So, I've decided to start Weight Watchers and I'm doing "The Firm" workout, which I've had success with before. Has anyone been able to lose weight while still taking Lexapro?? I'm hoping most of my weight gain is from eating and not a side effect of the drug.

• Does Topamax help counter SSRI (Lexapro) weight gain?
|
I've only been on Lexapro for 4 weeks, I'm starting to gain about a tenth or two of a pound each week, which is common with SSRIs. Most people who DO gain will gain gradually and end up gaining close to 20 pounds in a year.
I went to see my doctor today and explained the problem. He decided to put me on 50 mg of Topamax, in addition to Lexapro, since it has been proven to help people on SSRIs to lose weight. Its label use is actually for epilepsy and migraine headaches.
Has anyone else been put on this drug to counteract the effects of and SSRI? Or have you ever been on Topamax by itself and seen weightloss as a side effect?
What dosage is required to see weight loss benefits? Also, has anyone experiences hairloss with this drug? I've heard that can be a side effect.

• What are antidepressants with a common side effect of weight loss?
|
I was on Lexapro for about 9 months, which I stopped taking close to a year ago when I was 13. I had gained weight from the drug and still have the weight that was caused by it. A main cause of my depression is my weight. I am about to begin antidepressants once again, and I want to be on one that has a higher chance of weight loss, rather than weight gain. I researched and found out that some people have lost weight while on Prozac. I am going to talk to my doctor about taking Prozac, but I would like to know if there are other antidepressants that help with weight loss.

• Anyone who's taken Lexapro in the past..?
|
I recently went to see my doctor about my stress and anxiety. She originally approved me for 6 weeks of short term disability, referred me to a wellness center to help me learn to manage my stress, and put me on Paxil. At my 4-week checkup, she switched me over to Lexapro in orer to assist with side effects, including decreased sex drive and concerns over the drug preventing weight loss (I am obese and trying to focus on losing weight and getting healthy again). I am now almost out of the 6 week supply of Lexapro she gave me, and was hoping to stop taking that soon because as I understand it, any type of anti-depressent can inhibit weight loss.
My question, to anyone who has taken Lexapro and gone off it, is this: Did you have to be weaned off of it, or were you able to just discontinue it? I am only taking 10mg daily. I know this is probably something I will need to discuss with my doctor, and believe me, I will - I'm just looking for some general experiences. Thanks.

• Zoloft and Weight Gain/Loss?
|
My doctor recently prescribed .25 mg per day of Zoloft for anxiety disorder, panic disorder and OCD. In reading up on the drug online I saw that a significant amount of people complained of weight gain. When calling his office and inquiring about this, he said that as a side effect it wasn't common (the more common is weight loss) and most of peoples complaints were due to an increased appetite and to watch my portions and exercise and it shouldn't be a problem. In reading further consumer reports, I'm not sure I agree with this. I've tried prozac, wellbutrin, and paxil with no help and some with bad side effects. Priorly my doctor prescribed Lexapro but I didn't have it filled so I'm not sure what it would do. Does anyone know if 1) Zoloft will absolutely make a person gain weight, and 2) If there is something else to try that will help treat the above without weight gain, or 3) how to cope with the weight gain so it's not bad or at all? I'm short and don't want to gain 20+ lbs.

• Finally went to a family dr today for weight loss and anxierty postpartum...?
|
My daughter is almost 6 months old...I am nursing and have always been thin but i now weigh 7 pounds under my pre-pregnancy weight and was underweight to start with. I have been extremely tired even though my daughter has been sleeping through the night since she was two months old. I wake up with a pounding headache and am anxious all the time. The dr. said maybe i have an overactive thyroid or that I have generalized anxiety disorder. He told me I should wean my daugher and start taking lexapro...I do not want to take a drug for this...it never started until I had my daughter...do these things just sound like a normal part of being a new mom? Any of you experience any thing like this postpartum? He said it is not postpartum depression as I have not been feeling sad at all or angry. I do not want to wean my daughter yet. I would like to keep BF morning and night at least. Advice, experiences? Thanks!
