•Voting Question: Controlled diet on Lexapro to prevent weight gain?
|
I'm not on anti-depressants at the moment but my doctor prescribed me Lexapro. I am pretty health conscious and extremely active. If I estimate my caloric requirement to maintain my weight and not start eating more when I take Lexa would I still gain weight (water retention)?

• Lexapro & weight gain?
|
I have an eating disorder (bulimia), depression, and ADHD. My psychiatrist has recently changed my antidepressant from prozac to lexapro, and I'm on adderall for the ADHD. I've been reading about lexapro's side effects online and a lot of people have said that the medication caused them to gain weight. This information is really important to me because I just got out of treatment for my ED, am in recovery, and REALLY don't want to end up using eating disorder behaviors to counteract any weight gain caused by my meds. Even if the lexapro does cause weight gain, would the adderall possibly negate that because of its tendency to cause weight loss? I know that this question is better suited for me to ask my doctor, but I already know what her response would be. She would tell me that I shouldn't coose my antidepressant based on whether or not I'll gain weight, but by how well it rids me of depression. Excuse the expression, but duh; I already know that, and gaining weight will just send me right back into my eating disorder. So any information would be extremely helpful!

• does celexa cause weight gain or weight loss?
|
i was put on 10 mg of lexapro by gastroentrologist for 4 months and it did not improve my mental health or irritable bowel syndrome.
The psychiatrist then said i should change to 20 mg of celexa for some time and later he would put me on 40 mg of celexa.
Will I gain weight? I did not gain any weight while using lexapro for 4 months. Also will the medication improve IBS?
chilady: I have Bentyl at home but don't take it because on internet i read many bad things about it. But i admit Bentyl is great help for me.
I am 31 year old male. It is common for IBS patients to be put on SSRI's.

• Anyone on Lexapro for Depression or Anxiety?
|
My doctor is starting me on Lexapro 10mg. Its suppose to be the better of these types of drugs with less side effects. But after much research, I found out there is weight gain involved. Don't get me wrong my mental health is important. But dang I am already considered overweight (BMI) I really really really don't want to gain weight. As anyone tried this drug and can tell me what side effects you've had?

• I believe increasing my dose of Lexapro would have helped me a lot for IBS but doctor refused. Whom to complan?
|
I have severe IBS and my gastro-enterologist put me on lexapro 20 mg which is SSRI anti-depressant. This is my main medication for IBS control and it is effective and does help me a lot, however sometimes IBS episodes of chronic stomach pain still occur. At first he suggested that lexapro dosage should be increased to 30 mg for more relief. But few minutes later he returns back and says, "I have actually changed my mind. I am not comfortable with increasing the dosage as increasing dosages higher than 20 mg can have unpleasant side effects like significant weight gain and weight gain will lead to more health complications". He just backed off like coward and I am very offended. I know for sure it would have helped me a lot. I read on internet that a man said he takes 40 mg of lexapro daily and his IBS is totally cured. Instead the gastroenterologist said eat small meals several times a day instead of eating large meals once or twice, avoid eating wheat foods, etc etc and that is just bogus bull shut advice i disagree with. Whom to complain about this? He is obstructing treatment of patient
According to FDA 40 mg of lexapro is maximum safe dosage allowed. I am taking only half of maximum and i see no reason why he can't increase to 30mg which is still 10 mg less than maximum safe dose per FDA. Gastroenterologist says everyone's body is different and such general guidelines don't work for all. I disagree

• Is there an advantage to treating depression with Lexapro rather than Wellbutrin?
|
My psychologist suggested taking an antidepressant and I'd like to start as soon as possible (tomorrow would be good) and start putting my life back together. Unfortunately, this probably means going to the university clinic for a prescription. (I'll try a psychiatrist, but I'm afraid I may have to wait until after Christmas for an appointment, which doesn't thrill me.) So while the doctors there are nice enough, and I trust them not to prescribe anything dangerously stupid, they're not specialists and they're often in a rush, so sometimes it pays to go in knowing what to point out and what questions to ask.
From what my husband says and a bit of web browsing, I see that Wellbutrin is supposed to be nice because it doesn't have some of the common side effects associated with antidepressants - drowsiness, sexual dysfunction and weight gain. It may or may not come with more risk of seizures, though Wikipedia claims the evidence is unclear. On the other hand, Lexapro, which does come with these side effects seems quite popular, as do other typical SSRIs. I wonder why. Do they just work better?
I'm 30 yrs old. I'm not about to overdose on anything or kill myself. No other meds or health problems in the mix, for what it's worth.

• Question for ladies about female health.?
|
I am 39 soon to be 40...on birth control...but having alot of problems that I am not sure of...I am always tired, have a lot of spotting the whole month mostly when I go #2, some lower pelvice pain, bloated feeling somtimes, get moody a lot, weight gain more in my mid section, getting a little memory problems.....just feel like crap anymore! I was told I had endometriosis, I do take synthroid which was checked 3 months ago and adjusted up higher....Could this be the beginning of perimenopause?? Or does it sound like I need to see the doctor again?? My last visit was in August and all was fine...I was on lexapro a short time last summer for anxiety (so he says). I just haven't felt that well the last year! Any help??? Ideas?? Or am I just getting old! Thanks!

• Hi, Dianne here, age 46, long time sufferer of anxiety/depression.?
|
I've upped my Lexapro from 10 mg to 15 mg. I've been on the 15mg for about 3 weeks. Still very depressed, won't go out of the house, can't go to work. Lexaporo's pamphlet says to take 10mg for severe depression. My therapist says that I might need to be on 50 mg? I am afraid of all the weight gain etc. I was on Paxil for 17 years for anxiety with great success, but it stopped working. Anyone have any suggestions.....I really don't want to be on anything. I have such bad symptoms that I can hardly function. I am in a bad marriage and I'm going through memopause. I have a clean bill of physical health????
Any suggestions......I am so afraid of weight gain. Should I give the Lexapro more time......I've been on it since Dec. Hormones are "within range" which sounds silly to me since I'm menopausal???

• Are there any OTC supplements that work for depression?
|
I had been taking different antidepressants for years and I want to try something natural, but that actually works, but without the side effects of SSRIs like prozac, lexapro or zoloft. Many antidepressants have sexual side effects or weight gain, headaches, insomnia, etc. I don't have health insurance anymore so I can't afford refills anyway. Does 5HTP or St Johns Wort work and how many mg of each do you have to take for it to be effective.

• Given these symptoms and side effects...best SSRI?
|
I am living in the UK for work and my depression has become severe (I just scored a '39' on the BDI and similarly high on social anxiety), and so I do believe I need to be immediately medicated. Because the NHS system means that it could be months before I see a psychiatric specialist, however, the prescriptions are written by general physicians who are not properly trained in mental health. They are happy to dole out SSRIs, but that's about it. I've been on Effexor, Lexapro, and Prozac (not for very long). With all of these, I experienced weight gain, fatigue, flat affect, and anorgasmia. I was prescribed Wellbutrin XL before moving to the UK, and although I didn't experience these negative side effects, I wasn't on it long enough to determine if it worked (only a few weeks). Because Wellbutrin is not approved as an antidepressant in the UK, however, they will not prescribe it here for that purpose. They're very strict about off-label usage and can lose their license, apparently...
Christina W--that's all fine and good, the conspiracy theories, but how does it help those of us who genuinely need medication?
