An atrial septal defect is an abnormal opening in the wall separating the left and right upper chambers (atria) of the heart. •Open Question: Can a healthcare provider refuse payment after surgery?

A friend of mine recently had knee surgery. She provided her insurance info and was told that her healthcare provider would cover the surgery. After the surgery was finished she is now receiving bills for the full amount of the MRI, surgery, and physical therapy totaling nearly 8,000$. Is this not illegal? She did not sign a waiver stating she would pay full amount and to my knowledge that makes them accountable not her. Any ideas on what she should/can do? In need of knowledgable advice ASAP!
