• Any advice for switching from Effexor XR to Prozac to avoid sexual side effects?
|
I started on antidepressants about a month and a half ago to begin treating anxiety and depression. I started on 20mg of Paxil and it made me feel great but it killed orgasms. I switched to Effexor XR 37.5mg and it did nothing, almost made me feel worse. I went to 75mg of Effexor XR and I felt like my life was ending and orgasms became impossible. I spoke to my doctor today and he's suggested switching to 20mg of Prozac.
His plan is to drop the 75mg of Effexor XR cold turkey and go straight to 20mg of Prozac tomorrow morning. He said the other two options are Zoloft and Lexapro if I want to try more SSRI's after Prozac if I don't agree with it. Am I making a mistake my switching around first to find one without this side effect before beginning my therapy?
Do others have much luck in finding one? I'm trying to decide on whether I want to stick with Prozac if it makes me feel good even if I get the same problem. I know I have to wait and see. Any advice? I'm going to keep the 37.5mg tablets of Effexor XR near me the next week in case I have any withdrawal issues.

• Comparing the SSRI's - Lexapro, Paxil, Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa, etc.?
|
I know that all drugs work differently on different people, but I'm just posing very general questions.
Which SSRI tends to be the most effective for the most people? And which tends to have the lowest amount of side effects?
I took Paxil years ago for anxiety, and it was wonderful - worked great, and zero side effects except for the dreaded sexual side effcts. Withdrawal was bad but manageable by weaning myself slowly. More recently, I took it again, and it put me to sleep. I was yawning all day. Same with Lexapro.
My problems have increased now to incude depression as well. I tried Wellbutrin for a couple of days, and the first two days and the first night were fine, just a little dizziness, but the second night it made my anxiety way worse, and I couldn't sleep because I was having panic attacks and my heart was racing. I couldn't sit still.
I am thinking I need to go back to an SSRI, and potentially add the Wellbutrin back in once my anxiety is under control.
Prozac is the only one of the group I've truly never touched. Technically not Celexa either, but that's basically just another form of Lexapro. I was on Zoloft for a very short period of time a long time ago with no issue.
Any general thoughts on the differences between these meds?
I know these meds need a certain amount of time before giving up, but the wellbutrin made me have terrible panic attacks, heart racing, etc, and there was no way I could go in to work Monday like that.
I know Lexapro is not exactly the same as Celexa, but it's pretty darn close. They just pulled one of the isomers out of Celexa to make Lexapro, hoping that it would result in less side effects. (Or at least give them a new patent...)

• Which antidepressant, effexor or paxil or other?
|
I am 19 years old and I have social anxiety, OCD, and panic disorder with situational depression. I tried two different psychiatrists a few years ago and went on Lexapro, which didn't work at all. Then I was switched to Zoloft, which I didn't think worked either, so they kept upping the dosage and I ended up on 200 mg for several months. Finally I was so fed up that I tapered myself off and stopped going to the doctor, but my problems got better with CBT.
Now I seem to have relapsed over the summer of 2007 and finally decided to try a new psychiatrist again. What antidepressant do you think would work well if Lexapro and Zoloft did not seem to work? I was thinking Effexor or Paxil since the social anxiety is the worse thing for me. I do not care about withdrawal as I expect to be on an antidepressant for a long time, if not indefinitely. I do not want weight gain though but sexual side effects would not bother me because I am not sexually active. Any help is appreciated!
